Mali and Arthur are top Welsh baby names of 2024

The Office for National Statistics has released the most popular names for children born in Wales and England in 2024

The most popular names for children born in Wales and England in 2024 have been revealed, with Welsh names Mali and Arthur ranking highly.

Mali was once again the highest-ranking Welsh name, placing 13th overall in Wales - up three spots from 2023.

Arthur, which has its roots in Welsh culture, external, and derives from the Welsh word for "bear", was the fourth most popular name across the UK, and the top Welsh name in Wales.

The list was released by the Office for National Statistics, external, which compiles the list using birth registration data.

But what other Welsh names proved popular?

For the third year running, Mali topped the list of Welsh baby names.

Erin held on to second place, just as it did last year.

Eira, Lili and Nansi were equally popular, with 39 babies given each name.

Other Welsh names in the top 100 included Ffion, Efa, Anwen and Lowri.

Olivia remained the most popular for girls in Wales overall, with 136 babies given the name.

Elin and Lili were the top choices in Gwynedd, Seren led in Ceredigion, and Amelia was most popular in both Cardiff and Carmarthenshire.

For the fourth year in a row, Arthur was the most popular Welsh name for boys.

Other Welsh names making the list included Ioan, Tomos, Cai, Idris and Ifan.

Jac was most popular name in Gwynedd, Jack and Thomas topped the list in Conwy, while Noah led in Cardiff.

In 2023, the three most popular names for boys born in Wales were Noah, Oliver and Luca.
