Park and ride overnight parking set for approval

City of York Council said 4.5m park and ride journeys were made in 2024

Plans to introduce overnight parking at park and ride sites in York have been recommended for approval.
The City of York Council proposals would see dedicated spaces for overnight stays created at the Askham Bar and Rawcliffe Bar sites.
A council report said it would mean visitors coming to York for the weekend would be able to park outside the city centre and travel in by bus.
A £4.25m improvement scheme for the sites also includes expanding cycle parking and car club bays.
The council's executive will meet to decide on the plans on 7 October.
The measures are part of the council's Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) which is backed by £4m in Department for Transport funding.
A further £250,000 has been granted by the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
The funds, which support the council's aim to turn five park and ride locations into multi-use transport hubs, cover Askham Bar, Grimston Bar, Monks Cross, Rawcliffe Bar and Poppleton Bar.
As well as overnight parking, there are also plans for National Express and FlixBus coaches to stop at Askham Bar, and to install parcel lockers and bike repair stands across all the sites.
Upgrades are also planned at the Grimston Bar and Rawcliffe Bar sites, both of which opened in the 1990s and require substantial modernisation, according to a council report.
The report stated staff and toilet facilities at Grimston Bar were in a poor state of repair while Rawcliffe Bar suffered from anti-social behaviour and a lack of quality passenger facilities.
Site security has also been an issue at Monks Cross, with its building targeted by anti-social behaviour resulting in its toilets being closed.
