A man from Lincoln has pleaded not guilty to a charge of violent disorder relating to an outbreak of unrest in Liverpool city centre.

Lloyd Killner, 35, of Burton Road, appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court on Monday in connection with events that took place over the weekend.

Merseyside Police said the charges related to a group who were seen charging and swearing at police on Stanley Street on Saturday, with missiles being thrown at officers.

Mr Killner was remanded into custody to appear at Liverpool Crown Court on 30 August.

Asked to enter a plea, Mr Killner said: "Not guilty, I was on my own."

About 1,500 people were involved in a stand-off at the Pier Head on Saturday after they had broken away from two separate protests.

Two officers suffered injuries and some local businesses were damaged and looted, Merseyside Police said.

Declan Geiran, 29, of Kelso Road, Liverpool, pleaded guilty to violent disorder and arson.

Joshua Sanderson-Kirk, prosecuting, said on Saturday Geiran was seen on CCTV in Liverpool city centre using an "implement" to set fire to a police Ford Transit van which had been abandoned by officers.

Jimmy Bailey, 45, of Station Avenue in Little Sutton, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, pleaded not guilty to violent disorder.
