Foot-and-mouth outbreak in EU leads to import ban

The ban covers certain imports from Austria, Hungary, Slovakia and parts of Germany

Jersey's senior vet has suspended animal imports from certain European countries after outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease.

The ban announced on Monday, covers the import of fresh meat, dairy products, animal by-products and live susceptible animals from Austria, Hungary, Slovakia and parts of Germany.

States Veterinary Officer, Susana Ramos, said: "The suspension aims to protect the Island's livestock."

She said there are no known cases in Jersey and it is not a risk to humans.

The suspension applies to imports for personal consumption, including commercially produced and packaged items.

Ms Ramos said foot-and-mouth "is a severe contagious viral disease in livestock including cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs - those with a cloven-hoof."

She added: "The Animal Health and Welfare team continue to monitor the situation to determine whether any further restrictions will be necessary."
