A court in Jersey has ruled a supermarket worker who stabbed his manager will be detained indefinitely in a secure mental health facility.

Trevor Green, 56, pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and grave and criminal assault at Jersey's Royal Court.

The court heard Green became angry during a meeting in November 2023 and stabbed 35-year-old Katarzyna Czochara 16 times in the neck and upper body. Jurats were told she went into cardiac arrest and suffered life-changing injuries.

In a special verdict, Commissioner William Bailhache ordered Green be detained for treatment, as well as placing him under restrictions and a restraining order.

The court heard there was uncertainty over how long Green's treatment would take.

Given the highly unpredictable nature of his violence, he was potentially very dangerous, the court heard.

Ms Czochara said in a victim impact statement she lived in constant fear someone could attack her.

The court heard she was grateful to be alive, but she still felt anger and deep sadness at her loss.

The order on Green will remain in place until the court removes it.

Speaking after the case, Insp Lawrence Courtness, senior investigating officer, said Green had carried out a "shocking and unprovoked violent attack on his colleague Mrs Czochara.

"Kasia and her family continue to grapple with the traumatic events of that day and the severe injuries that nearly claimed her life," said Insp Courtness.

"The States of Jersey Police extend our heartfelt gratitude to Kasia and her family for their co-operation and resilience throughout this challenging process.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to reassure the general public that this was an isolated incident and knife crime in our Island remains rare."
