Pendle Hill is a popular destination for walkers in Lancashire but can be treacherous in poor weather conditions

A man who got lost on Pendle Hill while searching for his dog has been rescued by police officers.

Lancashire Police said after he had "ventured out in the dark" on Tuesday, the man "quickly became lost and disorientated, putting himself at risk" in the bad weather conditions and poor visibility.

In a social media post, officers said they carried out an "extensive search... over challenging terrain in extremely poor weather conditions".

Officers said both the man and his dog were later found "safe and well".

'Preparation saves lives'

They advised anyone heading up Pendle Hill and other upland areas to check weather forecasts and take a charged phone, as well as a torch, map and compass.

Officers also recommended wearing warm clothes with suitable footwear, and to avoid walking in darkness or poor visibility without suitable equipment and experience.

"Always let someone know your route and expected return time. The countryside is there to be enjoyed - but preparation saves lives."
