Signs discouraging camper van owners from sleeping overnight on the seafront in Withernsea have been installed by East Riding of Yorkshire Council

Signs have been installed along an East Yorkshire seafront to discourage camper van owners from sleeping in their vehicles overnight.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council said the notices at Withernsea were to "address and manage antisocial behaviour caused by some individuals".

Local councillor Jon Dimberline said people had complained to him about people blocking the pavement with barbecues and tipping toilet waste down drains.

A council spokesperson said the matter had "raised concerns within the local community" and the authority was "committed to tackling antisocial behaviour and enforcement action may be taken where necessary".

Dimberline added that he was not anti camper van, but some had been permanently parked on the promenade since Easter.

"They're using them as a holiday home almost," he said.

"So they would leave them parked there and they would go off and come back on a weekend and jump in the camper van and away they go.

"What started out as a small number of motorhomes staying there has now become a huge amount. There can be 15 or 20 of these motorhomes."

The council said the signs were part of a broader strategy aimed at tackling the problem while it "continued to explore more sustainable, long-term solutions".

The authority said obstruction of the public highway and improper disposal of chemical waste into public drains was a serious concern and it would "not hesitate to address such actions".
