Plans for six poultry houses at Newton Grange Farm face objections from Lincolnshire and beyond

An application for a chicken factory farm in Lincolnshire has prompted more than 1,000 objections from people across the UK.

Six poultry houses would be built at Newton Grange Farm in Newton, near Sleaford, capable of rearing more than two million birds each year.

The plans have attracted attention from beyond the county, with many opposing the plan on animal welfare grounds.

Applicant Hinch Enterprises said the scheme would meet high animal welfare standards and new poultry farms are needed to meet demand from supermarkets.

The company added the location – about 1,000m (3,281ft) from the nearest home – was "exceptionally well suited" for the plans.

One objection sent to North Kesteven District Council read: "I believe the industrial scale and nature of this project will inevitably lead to increased pollution from traffic and agricultural run-off, negatively affecting both the environment and the mental health of those who reside nearby."

Addresses given for those opposing the farm included Shropshire, Lancashire, Cardiff and France, with a petition signed by 64 local residents also submitted.

A resident in nearby Folkingham expressed her concerns about how the increase in lorry traffic would be "detrimental to both the infrastructure and the peaceful enjoyment of our beautiful countryside".

The site is located directly off the A15, meaning traffic will not need to use rural roads, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

A spokesperson for Hinch Enterprises previously rejected claims that it would be inhumane or detrimental to the area.

The application will be determined by the council at a later date.
