Council may sell former community centre

The former youth centre will be sold unless a new leaseholder comes forward

A former community centre may be sold off as part of a string of council-owned buildings and land being put on the market.

Norfolk County Council's cabinet members have agreed to dispose of the Broadland Youth and Community Centre in Hoveton, deciding it was “surplus to requirements”, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The property stopped being used as a youth centre in 2002, has been leased to a local charity - Broadland Youth Association Trust - and is now hired out for use by groups such as Slimming World and the local Women’s Institute.

It follows the group approaching the authority in the hope of securing a long-term arrangement for its use.

The authority said it would now explore selling or offering the site as a leasehold to the tenant, after agreeing it was no longer required by the authority.

If a deal is not secured, it would be offered on the open market.

The council has also disposed of the Carnegie Library in King’s Lynn, a former school house in Sedgeford, land in Scole and a building near Loddon fire station.
