Villagers asked to 'pop in for a pint' to save pub
- Published
A community group has asked residents of a Somerset village to "pop in for a pint" in a bid to save a much-loved pub.
Milverton Community Benefit Society (MCBS) plans to buy The Globe from current owners in order to preserve its future.
But while waiting for news on government grant funding footfall has dropped and the owners are considering closing the pub earlier than expected.
"We need to get the word out that our village pub is very much open for business right now," MCBS said in a statement.
'Get the word out'
MCBS needs £580,000 to buy the pub from the owners and has so far raised more than £180,000.
It hopes to edge closer to its total through a £300,000 Levelling Up grant from the government, but the general election delayed decisions over the available grant funding.
"The problem is that with all this talk of 'saving The Globe', footfall into the pub has dramatically fallen," the society said.
"We need to get the word out that our village pub is very much open for business right now."
The society said The Globe employs "our young people from Milverton, who will be in danger of losing their jobs".
"So what can you do to help? Pop in for a pint. Stop in for dinner. Tell other people about the Globe needing their immediate help," they added.
The society advised nearby residents the pub is open Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, and does a "fantastic Sunday lunch".
