Surrey Police are warning people to be on their guard against opportunist burglars

Surrey Police are warning people to be on their guard against burglars as the evenings get darker.

Police said opportunist burglars are on the lookout for a “quick win”, with homes empty for half-term, Halloween and Bonfire Night activities.

Surrey Police’s #DontFallVictim campaign aims to highlight the seasonal spike in burglary.

Residents are urged to check they’ve locked their doors, kept valuables out of sight and put some lights on timers if they are going to be out after dark.

Det Ch Insp Gareth Hicks, Surrey Police’s lead for burglary, said: “People deserve to feel safe in their homes and the burglary of a property destroys this sense of safety.

"We are asking people to consider their home security and if there is anything they can do to improve their home’s safety this autumn and winter."
