Five design teams have been shortlisted by the organisers of the project to create a memorial for the victims of the Grenfell Tower disaster.

The Grenfell Tower Memorial Commission and Royal Institute of British Architects received more than 25 applications to design the memorial, external.

Thelma Stober and Lord Boateng, co-chairs of the Grenfell Tower Memorial Commission, said they hoped the community would participate in the selection of a design team and contribute to the design of the memorial.

Seventy-two people were killed in the fire in west London on 14 June 2017.

The Memorial Commission said the shortlisted design teams were:

  • Curl La Tourelle + Head Architecture

  • Freehaus

  • George King Architects x Grow to Know

  • New South

  • Office Sian

The shortlisted teams will go through to a second round of evaluation, meet bereaved families, survivors and the community who live close to Grenfell Tower.

A winning team will be selected in the summer and the aim is for planning permission to be submitted in late 2026.

The Grenfell Tower Memorial Commission's 10 community representatives said choosing a shortlist moved them one step closer to bringing the community's vision into reality.

"Through this process, we intend to identify and appoint a specialist and worthy design team," they said.

"One that has proven experience of working on sensitive and community-focused projects, and who can leave no doubt in our minds about the integrity with which they will approach the vital task of designing a beautiful and fitting future memorial.

"Our 72 loved ones, and our community, deserve nothing less."
