A man has been convicted of the murder of a grandfather who died two days after an assault at a property in Slough.

Jakub Nowicki, 40, of Ascot Road, Maidenhead, was found guilty of the murder of Tomasz Kopec, 46, who died in hospital on 27 April.

Nowicki was also found guilty of an assault on a 34-year-old woman, who suffered only minor injuries, and admitted criminal damage at an earlier hearing at Reading Crown Court. He will be sentenced there on 17 November.

Mr Kopec's family said he was a "guiding light" and was "always present, always supportive and always ready with a smile or a word of encouragement".

In a statement published after his death, they said: "Though he is no longer with us in person, his spirit lives on in the lessons he taught, the traditions he passed down, and the deep love he gave so freely.

"We miss him so much, but we will carry him with us always."

Det Insp Nick Hind, from Thames Valley Police's Major Crime Unit, said officers' thoughts were with Mr Kopec's family and friends.

"We hope this conviction brings even a small measure of comfort as they continue to carry the weight of such profound loss following this savage and senseless act of violence," he added.
