A team of 22 firefighters have tackled a blaze at a garage in Jersey.

Jersey Fire and Rescue Service said it received multiple 999 calls reporting the fire in a residential estate in St Brelade at about 23:00 BST on Saturday.

A spokesperson for the fire service said crews sent to the scene found a detached garage that was "fully" on fire and producing "a large amount of smoke due to combustibles inside".

Crews remained at the scene for about four hours and were able to control the fire and stop it from spreading, the spokesperson added.

Due to the heavy smoke, residents were advised to return indoors and close their doors and windows while crews worked at the scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel to tackle the fire, while another crew used a medium water jet to protect surrounding properties and vehicles, the fire service said.

It said the blaze caused extensive damage to the garage and made the roof structure unsafe.

An aerial ladder platform was used to help remove unstable sections of the building so firefighters could fully extinguish the fire.

Police officers assisted with keeping the area secure and paramedics remained on standby as a precaution.

Watch commander Richard Ryan said: "I'd like to thank the local residents for their patience and cooperation while crews worked to bring the fire under control.

"Their quick actions and understanding helped ensure the safety of everyone in the area."

The fire service handed the site over to its occupiers, Island Energy and the Jersey Electricity Company, to ensure the area is safe.
