A 1980s-themed public fireworks event scheduled to be held in the north of the Isle of Man on Sunday has been cancelled on safety grounds due to forecasted strong winds.

The annual display, which attracts thousands of spectators to Ramsey, had been due to light up the sky above the Mooragh Park from 19:30 GMT.

The "difficult decision" had been made on safety grounds and plans to move to a separate date were being considered, Ramsey Commissioners said.

Ronaldsway Met Office has warned of winds of up to 35mph (56kmh) on Sunday evening, with gusts increasing to 45mph (72km/h) overnight.

The local authority said: "The safety of those involved in or attending the display is our primary concern and it is for this reason we have made the difficult decision to cancel the event.

"We are looking at the possibility of holding a display at a later date and will make an announcement about that in due course."
