The City of Wolverhampton Council has been recognised with a national public health award.

The authority was named Employer of the Year by The UK Public Health Register (UKPHR), at the organisation's innovation awards last week.

Judges praised the team for its "exceptional work" to support practitioners' development to tackle health inequalities and help people live longer and healthier lives.

Councillor Obaida Ahmed, cabinet member for health, wellbeing and community, said the award recognised the council's commitment to "nurturing local talent" and "investing in staff", as well as the team's strength.

The authority's public health team also works in partnership with health and social care, voluntary and community organisations across the city.

The council credited initiatives, including a practitioner learning hub, and its academic partnership with the University of Wolverhampton for its "culture of continuous learning and professional development".

It was previously named UKPHR Employer of the Year in 2022 after it carried out a development programme to train staff to meet the range of health challenges faced by people in the city.
