About 100 firefighters are tackling a fire at a winter sports shop in south-east London, with people urged to avoid the area.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) has said it has also sent 15 fire engines to the shop which is alight in Perry Vale, Forest Hill. The shop has flats above it and a ground floor workshop at the back.

Nearby residents are being advised to keep their doors and windows shut due to smoke from the blaze and the brigade has said it expects to work through the night to bring it under control.

Significant traffic disruption is also expected on the nearby A205 South Circular Road and rail services via Forest Hill station are also affected, the fire service added.

The fire brigade said it received the first of 49 calls about the fire at 18:27 BST.

Station Commander Anthony Lewis, who is at the scene, said: "This will be a protracted incident, with crews working through the night to fully extinguish this fire."

A 32-metre turntable ladder is being used as a water tower to extinguish the fire from above.

Crews from Forest Hill, Lewisham, Beckenham, West Norwood and surrounding fire stations have been deployed.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
