Work is set to start on a new pedestrian and cycle bridge in Leamington Spa.

The bridge, linking Radford Road and Newbold Comyn, is to replace a footbridge that was removed in March, having been closed on safety grounds in August 2023.

Piling works will begin on Monday 16 September ahead of construction of new bridge abutments, said Warwick District Council.

The new bridge over the River Leam is expected to be craned into place during November, followed by work on new footpaths and landscaping.

"After a very long and complicated applications process, I am now delighted to say that it’s full-steam ahead for local residents to get this vital access point reinstated," said councillor Will Roberts.

The fact the bridge was in a nature reserve and on a flood plain had added time to deliver the scheme, said the local authority.

But it will have been worth the wait, said Mr Roberts, and will result in a "much-improved wider bridge suitable for both pedestrians and cyclists."
