A Devon lifeboat was put into action while returning home after having maintenance carried out.
Exmouth RNLI said its volunteers were on board the R&J Welburn, which had been in Poole, Dorset, for a few months for scheduled repairs, when it received a call from HM Coastguard to assist in a search for a missing kayaker off the Dorset coast on Friday.
A spokesperson for the crew said the kayaker was soon found and taken to safety by Poole RNLI, which meant the boat could be stood down.
Exmouth RNLI said the crew was able to get back to base just after 17:30 GMT.
