Government cash bid to help congestion-hit road

A multi-million pound bid for government money has been made to try to help alleviate a congested road in south Essex.
The A127 at the Fortune of War and Halfway House junctions at Basildon could undergo improvements in spring 2027 if Essex County Council manages to get the money put in place.
The council said the road was "a critically important corridor" linking London and the area, its ports and Southend Airport.
Under the proposals, the road at the Fortune of War junction would be straightened and an extra eastbound lane built between the Halfway House and Dunton junctions.
'Pinch points'
The plans also include upgrades to walking and cycling routes as well as bus stops.
The local authority said it was hoped the improvements would help cut traffic jams and speed up journeys.
The council said: "People regularly experience congestion and delays at key junctions along the corridor, leading to unreliable journey times and negative impacts on our economy.
"The proposed... project is a crucial first step in addressing these issues and will improve key pinch points along the A127."
Bids for money have been made to the Department for Transport’s Major Road Network fund.
If successful, planning applications would be submitted in 2026 and construction could start in 2027.
The council has not disclosed exactly how much money it is bidding for.
A public consultation has been scheduled for next year.
