Motorists are being warned by National Highways to expect delays on a section of the A38 in Cornwall until the end of June.
A bridge was struck near Bodmin Parkway railway station on Saturday afternoon, during a three-vehicle crash.
Traffic lights have been installed and a 40mph (64km/h) speed limit is in place.
Engineers will build scaffolding on the outside of the bridge to create a platform to carry out the repair works which are expected to take until 30 June.
The damaged bridge is at "quite a pinch point"
Terry Robinson, the engineering team manager for National Highways, said "it's quite a pinch point in the carriageway" at the site of the damage.
Specialist stone masons will also be brought in to help repair the bridge.
The road will be closed - as part of a planned closure - late on Saturday until early Sunday, when highways bosses said the scaffolding would be installed.
