A new Land's End-style signpost has been added to a resort pier to boost tourism and encourage visitors to take selfies.

The "selfie signpost" has been installed on Southend Pier and resembles the multi-directional attraction in Cornwall.

It includes the direction and distance to world cities and local hotspots, as well as a nod to to Southend Pier's role during the Second World War.

Tony Cox, Conservative leader of Southend-on-Sea City Council, said the new feature was "a representation of Southend's welcoming spirit".

A council spokesperson said: "The signpost's strategic location at the pier head offers breath-taking views of the Thames Estuary, making it an ideal spot for capturing memories."

Southend Pier served as a muster point for boats heading to Dunkirk, and the signpost includes the French port.

Mr Cox said: "This new feature symbolises our commitment to rejuvenating Southend Pier, ensuring it remains a beacon of pride for our community and an enticing draw for visitors.

"The signpost is more than just a photo opportunity; it's a representation of Southend's welcoming spirit and our connection to both local and global destinations.

"We are excited for everyone to experience it."
