House of Fraser in Carlisle is set to permanently close in a matter of months.

The store, in English Street, will shut in May and its owner, Frasers Group, said it was "committed" to finding new roles for its staff where possible.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank our staff for their hard work and dedication," the company added.

Caffè Nero, which operates from inside the building, is also scheduled to close.

It said it was "actively" looking for other premises and "very much enjoyed" operating in the city.

The city centre building was sold for a reported £750,000 in 2023.

The department store - the only branch in Cumbria - had been earmarked for closure in 2018 when it was announced the majority of House of Fraser sites would shut.

However, the store was saved after the business was bought by the then Sports Direct owner Mike Ashley, protecting almost 70 jobs.
