Road closures introduced following a diesel spill on the A24 were set to be lifted on Friday, Surrey County Council has said.

The restrictions were set up after a lorry leaked 400 litres (88 gallons) of fuel along 10 miles (16km) of roads on 9 July.

The county council said the stretch of road between the Deepdene and Givons Grove roundabouts had reopened. The Beare Green roundabout to Flint Hill roundabout remains "under works" but staff are committed to "open it later today".

The council said once all roads had been reopened, stud work may need to be completed and all roundabouts would be resurfaced before 22 July.

The spill affected roads around Dorking and Leatherhead, as well as at the Cobham services on the M25.

A council spokesperson said: "Night works and resurfacing of roundabouts are crucial steps to ensure the safety and reliability of this key route.

"Thank you for your patience and understanding. Your co-operation is invaluable as we work towards fully reopening the A24."

Surrey Police launched a criminal investigation into the spillage and a man in his 60s was interviewed by officers on suspicion of offences including criminal damage reckless to endanger life, failing to stop at the scene of an collision, dangerous driving, and careless driving.
