Passengers on the South Yorkshire Supertram network have been warned to expect disruption as an upgrade scheme reaches its second phase.

Following the project's completion, tram users could expect quieter, smoother journeys as worn rails were in the process of being removed.

The second phase of work focused on blue and purple routes and would impact tram services between Sheffield Station, Gleadless Townend and Herdings Park until 11 August.

The project, which had three phases, aimed to be completed by the beginning of September, with improvements said to "future-proof" the network for generations.

Sections of the blue route would be replaced by a bus service during the work, with the purple route not running.

The work formed part of the £5m being spent on the network in 2024, the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority said.

In the third phase, work on the yellow route serving Middlewood Road  was due to begin on 12 August and run until 1 September.

Tram users were told that the impact of the works would be kept to a minimum and only affect small sections of the tram track at a time.
