The Warren Youth Project in Hull has been awarded a "life-changing" £1.9m grant from the Youth Investment Fund.

The charity provides 24-hour support to young people from across Hull and East Yorkshire as well as training, education and counselling.

Officials said the money would be used to renovate the project's building in Hull city centre and improve its services to young people.

Chief executive JJ Tatten said: "We're absolutely thrilled, We have a fantastic old building but it's in desperate need of TLC."

The redevelopment work is due to start in March and be completed by November.

The Warren, based in Queens Dock Avenue, has been operating in Hull since 1983.

It has a digital software facility and a record label to support local musicians and songwriters.

The Government funding will be used to create a range of new facilities including mental health and wellbeing areas, music recording studios, dance and theatre spaces, kitchens and a lift for disability access.

Mr Tatten told the BBC: "We're also going to build a wet room because a lot of our young people sadly don't have facilities where they live or if they're homeless.

"This will address some serious issues with a wonderful, impactful pot of funding".

Last year, The Warren worked with 1,469 young people in the city and hopes to expand the service to more in the coming years.

He added: "We want to build a world-class facility because that's what young people in Hull deserve," Mr Tatten added.

The Youth Investment Fund also awarded £340,000 to the Hull FC Rugby Community Sports and Education Foundation, Hull's Portobello Scout Group, Scunthorpe Sea Cadets and Foresight North East Lincolnshire.
