A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent after a motorbike was hit by a car.

It happened shortly before 14:55 GMT on Monday, with emergency services called to reports of an injured person lying on the B1426 Sunderland Road in Gateshead, near the junction with Stoneygate Lane.

Northumbria Police confirmed it was treating the crash as deliberate and said it had arrested a man in his 50s.

He has since been released under investigation.

The motorbike rider, a man in his 20s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries and remained there in a stable condition, the force said.

He had been riding a black motorbike when it was struck by a car believed to be a SEAT Cupra, Northumbria Police said, with the driver leaving the scene before officers arrived.

Police continue to appeal for witnesses and footage of the incident.
