'Safe zones' launched to help people in need
- Published
Designated "safe zones" are being introduced in Wakefield and Pontefract for anyone who needs help when out and about.
Wakefield Council said they were located in places such as shopping centres, council buildings, doctor's surgeries and some businesses.
Staff are trained to help people if they are lost, feel unwell, are worried or need other help.
The council said they were available for anyone to use but staff were "especially trained to help people with learning disabilities, autism and dementia".
'Coming together'
The safe zones can be identified by a window or floor sticker at the entrance to the business.
The initiative is part of the Safer Together Partnership between Wakefield Council and West Yorkshire Police.
Ch Insp Emma Hooks, Wakefield District Lead for Neighbourhoods and Partnerships, said: “This initiative is all about the community coming together to help keep people safe.
"It is important that when someone is feeling vulnerable, they know where to go for assistance."
The council said the zones could be found on a map on its website, external.
