A post office in St Helier has been forced to keep its doors locked after a spate of vandalism.

Jersey Post said the premises on Broad Street had been broken into, been damaged by graffiti, and had a fire started inside it in recent months.

Following the fire incident, Jersey Post has locked the foyer doors which are normally kept open to allow people to access security boxes at any time.

A spokesperson for States of Jersey Police said officers had launched an investigation into the vandalism.

Jersey Post managing director Julie Thomas said a security measure which asked customers to put their box code in before entering the building had been added, but this was forced open.

Not being able to give customers 24-hour access to security boxes after was an "inconvenience", she said.

Engineers have been working at the building to repair damage caused by the vandalism, and there has been a clean-up done.

'Bear with us'

Ms Thomas added there had been no lasting damage to the post office, and in a message to customers, said: "Just bear with us and we'll get the facility up and running as soon as we possibly can for you."
