A volunteer who set up a support group to help vulnerable people has spoken of her surprise after receiving an award from the Prime Minister.

Wolverhampton’s Leanne McDonald was honoured with a Points of Light award, which recognises inspiring people who make a positive change in their communities.

She set up Simple Acts of Kindness during the pandemic to help distribute essential items, including clothing and household goods, to people who need them.

The 41-year-old said it was lovely to be recognised and that she hoped it would help to raise awareness of the group.

“I’m still quite surprised. I don’t do it for the recognition – I do it because it’s needed,” she said.

As well as appealing for and gathering donations, the group of volunteers also helps to signpost people to support services and other community projects.

They focus on collecting donations of clothing, household goods and furniture that might otherwise have been thrown away.

People who have benefited include those who have seen their homes gutted by fire, or families who have been forced to seek refuge following domestic incidents.

'Making a massive impact'

Ms McDonald said the group has expanded its services rapidly and now aids up to six or seven families every week.

She added that it would not have been possible without the generosity of the people who have supported the initiative.

“Without everyone supporting, we wouldn’t have been able to help the people we have. It’s making a massive impact,” she said.

Wolverhampton South West MP Stuart Anderson presented Ms McDonald with her award on Friday, and he described Simple Acts of Kindness as a fantastic addition to the community.

He said: “This is a fantastic achievement which recognises the meaningful change that outstanding volunteers such as Leanne are making in communities like Wolverhampton.”
