Expansion plans for container complex submitted

Expansion plans have been submitted for Seaburn Stack

Plans to expand a leisure centre built from storage containers and make it a permanent feature of a seafront have been submitted.

Seaburn Stack in Sunderland was initially granted temporary planning permission until 2027.

Neighbours have previously expressed concerns about noise levels coming from the venue.

The new application seeks to expand the rear of the site, reduce noise for locals and make it permanent.

It says "noise mitigation measures, boundary enclosure(s) and ancillary works" will take place at the leisure development.

A previous plan was submitted to the council in early 2024 but it was withdrawn after opposition from neighbours over noise, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

A recent update published on Sunderland City Council's planning portal confirmed that application was withdrawn on 3 April 2025.

The new sound proofing measures will include "a solid sofit on the underside of the existing tents" and "lobbies added to the ground floor entrances and exits".

Alongside the noise proofing, there will be a 10,226 sq ft (950 sq m) "competitive socialising area", involving shuffleboard, darts, bowling, beer pong and pool tables.

On the first floor there will be a new function room overlooking the games below.

The extension will be built from a portal frame structure with a brick finish and acoustic screening to reduce noise.

There are no proposed changes to the opening hours and all 130 staff will be kept.
