Work to improve toilet facilities at Hull's Paragon Interchange will take place later this month, TransPennine Express (TPE) has confirmed.

TPE, which runs the station as well as rail services, said a £500,000 project to refurbish the existing facilities and add new cubicles would start on Friday 20 September.

The operator revealed the details of the work following a letter from Dame Diana Johnson, the Hull North and Cottingham MP, who described the situation as "unacceptably poor".

It said the refurbishment project was due to be completed by spring 2025.

Kathryn O’Brien, customer experience and transformation director at TPE, said: “We are working hard to improve the toilets for our customers, and we ask them to bear with us while work is taking place.

"Once work is complete, we know these changes will make a huge difference to our customers travelling on our network."

As part of the project, TPE has confirmed it will fit improved loos, sinks, hand dryers and flooring.

Confirmation of the refurbishment project came days after Dame Diana, who had previously raised the issue in the House of Commons, asked for an update.

In a social media post, she claimed previous work at the station had been "botched", leading to a "downgrade in quality" that did "little for the image of Hull".

She added: "Improvements to rail infrastructure and services in Hull will clearly take time to achieve.

"I hope a modest, but welcome, start can be made by finally sorting out the unsatisfactory situation that has prevailed for some six years now."

TPE said that while the work takes place, temporary facilities will be outside the station next to the Royal Hotel on Ferensway.

Accessible toilets will still be available inside the station, and the waiting area will be temporarily relocated to the existing ticket hall.
