Saints given permission to develop land

A professional rugby union club has been given outline planning permission to develop land near its stadium.

West Northamptonshire Council's south planning committee has approved Northampton Saints' bid for land at Ross Road, near its junction with Edgar Mobbs Way.

The BBC understands that Saints have no specific plans in place for the land but are exploring a number of commercial development opportunities.

The one-acre (0.39 hectares) site is located west of two existing training pitches.

A meeting of the Conservative-controlled council, external approved the plans, despite objections from St James Residents Association, which cited "highway safety issues" as a result of increased traffic.

According to council documents, outline permission has been granted for a unit sized up to 12,594 sq ft (1,170 sq m), along with a new site access via Ross Road.
