People in Alderney have been reminded about the island's planning rules by the government.

The States of Alderney said most domestic and commercial development needed planning permission.

A spokesperson said: "Whether you are planning on a new garden room to enjoy the sunset views from or a new business venture to diversify your career, no matter the size or scale, planning permission may be required."

The States said regulation was "necessary to ensure that the integrity and beauty" of the island was not "compromised" and that building standards were met.

Other projects that would need permission included tree removal, using a domestic garage as a commercial workshop and letting out an annexe as a holiday let, the States said.

Anyone needing advice can contact the island's planners, the spokesperson said.
