A tribute has been paid to a teenage girl who died from a single stab wound.

Scarlett Vickers was found dead at her home in Geneva Road, Darlington, County Durham, on Friday.

Su Gill, principal at Haughton Academy, where Scarlett was a pupil, said that the 14-year-old was "popular, respectful and polite" and that everyone was "saddened".

Her parents Simon Vickers, 49, and Sarah Hall, 44, have been remanded in custody accused of her murder.

In a statement, Ms Gill said: "Scarlett was always immaculately turned out, respectful and polite. , external

"A very friendly girl, with a great sense of humour, she was popular with her friends and will be greatly missed by everyone at school."

She added that the Education Village Academy Trust was "extremely saddened by the news" and was supporting the school's community.

Ms Gill also said that a memorial space had been created at the village green, within the main school site, for flowers to be placed in Scarlett's memory.

"This is a very difficult time for us all but we know we can get through it by coming together as a strong community and by remembering Scarlett in our own ways," she added.

Her parents, who did not enter pleas at a hearing at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court, will next appear at Teesside Crown Court on 5 August.
