Sections of the A24 in Surrey have reopened after being closed following a diesel spill.

On Tuesday, a lorry leaked 400 litres (88 gallons) of diesel along 10 miles (16km) of roads in the county - which led to parts of the A24 being shut.

The road is now open between Clarks Green Roundabout and Beare Green Roundabout, from Deepdene Roundabout to Denbies Roundabout, and between Givens Grove and junction nine of the M25.

On Sunday, Surrey Highways said: "We are still focused on the section between Denbies Roundabout and Givons Grove Roundabout, and have laid a further 400 tonnes [400,000kg] of new road surface today."

The spokesperson added: "We're committed to repairing large sections of the A24 as quickly and safely as possible."

Parts of the road are being resurfaced because of the extent of the damage and this is expected to be completed by 22 July.

Police launched a criminal investigation into the spillage and a man in his 60s was interviewed by officers on suspicion of offences including criminal damage reckless to endanger life, failing to stop at the scene of an collision, dangerous driving, and careless driving.

Surrey County Council first estimated that 16,000 litres (3,520 gallons) of fuel had been spilled, but the authority revised the figure to 400 litres."
