A council is giving away free trees through the autumn and winter months in a bid to "enhance nature".

Staffordshire County Council said people would be able to plant them in their own gardens or on private land through community groups, where permissions were in place.

Oak, hawthorn, rowan, hazel, silver birch, crab apple and whitebeam would be among the trees handed out at a number of giveaway events across the county.

The scheme has been organised by the Staffordshire Sustainability Board, which tackles environmental sustainability issues across the county.

Councillor Andrew Mynors, vice chair of the board and cabinet member for connectivity at Staffordshire County Council, said: "We're proud to be working together across Staffordshire to support residents in taking practical steps to improve their surroundings.

"These events are a great opportunity for communities to get involved and help protect and enhance nature."

The council will be giving away trees at the following events:

  • South Staffordshire - 27 October, Baggeridge Country Park

  • Lichfield - 28 October, Chasewater Country Park

  • Tamworth - 29 October, Tamworth Castle Grounds

  • Cannock - 30 October, Marquis Drive

  • Stafford - 31 October, Albert's Cafe

  • Newcastle-under-Lyme - 21 November, Apedale Country Park

  • East Staffordshire - 16 February, The Greenhouse at Stapenhill Cemetery

  • Staffordshire Moorlands - 17 February, Deep Hayes Country Park

  • Stoke-on-Trent - 18 February, Westport Lake
