A total of £1m will be donated to Jersey charities from dormant bank accounts.

The Government of Jersey said the funds had come from accounts which had been dormant for at least 15 years.

It said funds would go to the Jersey Community Foundation (JCF), which would then pass it on to local charitable and voluntary organisations.

Charitable organisations hoping to benefit from the funding have until Thursday to apply.

Chief Minister Lyndon Farnham said the funds would "make a difference to islanders' lives".

He said: “Charities and the voluntary sector play a central role in the life of our Island.

"I am aware of the ongoing challenges they face – with rising costs and growing demand – and have been determined to assist where possible."

The government said charities could use grants to "sustain or strengthen the resilience and sustainability of their organisation".

Anna Terry, JCF CEO, said the funding would "provide much-needed support to local organisations that are working tirelessly to help those most in need".
