A couple died in a car crash while holidaying in Canada, an inquest has heard.

Vicki Atkinson, 63, and her husband Steven, 61, from Flaxton near York, were killed when their SUV crossed the central reservation on a highway in British Columbia and crashed into an incoming HGV on 22 October 2022.

According to a death notice, the couple had been celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary.

They both died at the scene, an inquest into their deaths at North Yorkshire Coroners' Court on Tuesday was told.

Senior coroner Jon Heath said the couple both died from "multiple blunt force trauma as a consequence of a motor vehicle collision".

The inquest heard Mrs Atkinson had been driving the car, with her husband in the passenger seat.

They had been travelling northbound at 100km/h (62mph) on Highway 95 near the town of Golden when their vehicle crossed the central reservation of the undivided road and collided with a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.

No further details about the crash were provided during the brief hearing, which was attended by the couple's daughters, Amy and Ruth.

Recording a conclusion, Mr Heath said the couple died due to a road traffic collision.
