A major water pipe that burst caused "significant flooding" in south-east London on Tuesday.

Southwark Council said it worked with Thames Water and the Metropolitan Police at the scene on Ilderton Road, Bermondsey.

A council spokesperson said they had set up a rest centre to help people who had to leave their homes due to flooding.

Thames Water said it was on site dealing with the burst pipe, which affected customers in 12 postcode areas.

Local resident Ash said the flooding on Tuesday morning was "really bad".

"The water came all the way down the road, from the bridge all the way down to the train station," he said.

"I've only ever seen this in a tsunami or a hurricane-like situation."

Another resident, Lauren, said: "It was quite scary really because we didn't know how high it was going to come up. I'm just so grateful that the house isn't damaged."

"We know some properties have unfortunately been affected by flooding," a Thames Water spokesperson said.

"Our team is on the ground supporting residents. Work to clear the local area is under way and we'll allow access to as much of the area as possible when it is safe to do so.

"To keep everyone safe, traffic management is in place while work is ongoing."

They added that homes in SE1, SE4, SE5, SE8, SE11, SE14, SE15, SE16, SE17, SW4, SW8 and SW9 should all have water, following the disruption.
