Future of CCTV in Surrey district resolved

A Surrey council has agreed to support the roll out of record-only CCTV in the district.
Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) said this policy was in line with the views of residents expressed in a consultation carried out in late 2023.
The results from the consultation suggested that CCTV was seen as a deterrent to crime and the continued provision of cameras was supported.
Councillor Keira Vyvyan-Robinson said: "As a result of the consultation, we have committed to investing in the continued provision of public realm CCTV in Mole Valley."
The cabinet at MVDC unanimously agreed to support the roll out at a meeting on 22 October.
MVDC has been voluntarily maintaining the day-to-day running of Mole Valley’s CCTV since Surrey Police vacated Reigate Police Station in 2023, as a result of the discovery of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (Raac) in the building.
There are currently 51 cameras in 38 locations across the district. Surrey Police is the main user of the cameras and continue to access them when required.
The council said £100,000 was provisionally allocated in the 2024/25 Budget, along with annual running costs of £40,000 to upgrade the existing cameras.
They added that the next steps will see MVDC begin a procurement exercise to increase coverage across the district.
