A bungalow has been partially destroyed after a fire broke out in the early hours of the morning.

It happened in Church Road in Hadleigh, Essex, shortly after 03:00 BST.

Essex County Fire & Rescue Service said the fire had spread through the roof and crews worked to prevent it reaching nearby homes.

Station manager Jason Gould said: "Luckily the two occupants were woken by the smoke and managed to get out of the property. The incident is a reminder of how important smoke alarms are to give you and your family an early warning."

Crews remained at the scene.

The incident is close to Hadleigh Junior School, but the school has not been affected and Church Road would be open as normal, the fire service said.
