A man has been killed in a three-car crash that closed part of the A12 in Essex on Tuesday, police have said.

The 58-year-old driver of a Volkswagen Polo died at the scene at Kelvedon, near Colchester.

Emergency services were called just after 09:30 BST to the collision, which police said involved the grey Polo, a grey Mercedes CLA 200 and a black Mercedes E220.

The 21-year-old male driver of the black Mercedes has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and was in police custody.

Essex Police said: "Despite the best efforts of paramedics, the 58-year-old driver of the VW Polo sadly died at the scene.

"His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers at this difficult time."

The East of England Ambulance Service had previously confirmed the air ambulance, along with four vehicles, had attended the scene at Rivenhall End.

The road was closed for a number of hours, initially in both directions, between junction 23 at Kelvedon and junction 24 at Feering.

It was fully reopened just after 15:00.

Police have urged anyone who witnessed the crash or has any dashcam footage to contact them.
