A police force is encouraging drivers who are looking to sell their cars to be vigilant after a series of vehicle thefts.

Hertfordshire Police said a number of vehicles had been stolen from Hertsmere, Dacorum and East Hertfordshire after people had tried to sell their cars.

The force said the scam involved offenders turning up to view a car and carrying out a "key swap" before stealing the key to take the vehicle later.

Det Sgt Chris Dale said: "We are urging residents to remain vigilant and if you are planning to sell your vehicle make sure you don't leave your vehicle or key unattended with any prospective buyer."

He said it was mostly Mercedes which had been affected, but other brands too.

Mr Dale said: "Don't agree to meet a buyer alone, always take someone with you if you are meeting away from your home."

Hertfordshire Police said a 78-year-old man and 22-year-old woman from Ilford had been arrested on suspicion of theft of motor vehicles.
