Labour and Tories both win in by-elections

The political landscape at North Lincolnshire Council remains unchanged following two by-elections

The Conservatives and Labour have both won a councillor in two by-elections for North Lincolnshire.

Voters in the Axholme North and Brumby Wards went to the polls following the deaths of previous councillors John Briggs and Steve Swift in 2024.

Ian Bint was elected for the Conservatives and Labour's Daniel Hurt is also a new councillor.

The political landscape at the council remains unchanged following the results.

The full result for Axholme North was:

• Ian Bint, Conservatives, 901 votes

• Lara Chaplin, Labour, 378 votes

• Alan Kelly, Liberal Democrats, 67 votes

The full result for Brumby was:

• Daniel Hart, Labour, 616 votes

• Alan Cook, Conservatives, 294 votes

• Peter Dennington, Green Party, 49 votes

• Robin Abram, Liberal Democrats, 43 votes

Mr Swift and Mr Briggs had been long-standing councillors in North Lincolnshire.

Mr Swift, a former mayor of Bottesford, died after being taken ill while delivering a speech at a council meeting in March.

In his victory speech, Mr Hart paid tribute to his predecessor describing him as a "great voice for the community" and a "committed campaigner".

Mr Briggs had been mayor of North Lincolnshire twice and was due to be again in May. He was first elected to the council in 1999.

Mr Bint also praised his forerunner and said: "Nobody wanted this by-election and we must remember former mayor John Briggs.

"He was a great servant to the Isle of Axholme and the whole of North Lincolnshire for many years."
