A square in the centre of a town on the Isle of Man has been closed to traffic for seven months.

Market Square in Castletown, which had been open to parking during the winter months, will be pedestrianised until October.

The area was first partially closed to vehicles on a trial basis in 2017, which was extended to being fully shut in summer 2022.

Castletown Commissioners have used the space to host several events, including screenings of some Rugby World Cup games.

In November last year, the board supported a motion to apply to pedestrianise the square on a permanent basis, but said it would “likely” need more evidence from a public consultation if that step was taken.

The Department of Infrastructure would have the final say on any decision.

The current order for the prohibition of parking in the square ends on 1 October.
