Police have appealed for help in locating thieves who crashed a car towing a stolen caravan and then fled the scene.

The caravan had been taken from a field near Stokesley, North Yorkshire, on Friday evening.

North Yorkshire Police said a BMW, with a false number plate, had been used to tow the caravan, but the driver lost control and hit a telegraph pole on the B1257.

The road was closed for a short period to enable the car and caravan, which were extensively damaged, to be recovered.

The road was closed between Ingleby Greenhow and Stokesley from about 23:00 BST until 00:00 BST.

A police spokesperson said a black BMW 3-series with the false number plate YG56 ZLK had been used to take the Swift Continental caravan from a field in Ingleby Greenhow.

"We’re appealing for the public’s help, particularly anyone who has CCTV or dashcam footage from the route between Ingleby Greenhow and Stokesley," they said."

The force has also asked anyone who saw anything suspicious to contact them.
