A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman in her 80s was found dead at a house.

Paramedics found the woman after being called to Monmouth Close in Westonzoyland, near Bridgwater in Somerset, at 09:17 BST on Tuesday morning.

Avon and Somerset Police said a man in his 60s was arrested shortly before 10:00 and taken to hospital, where he remains in police custody.

Neighbourhood Inspector Jon Eamer said the woman's family had been made aware of her death and were being supported through an "incredibly upsetting time".

Detectives from the force's major crime investigation team are currently at the scene, he said, adding that a forensic post-mortem examination would also be carried out.

"Our enquiries are at an early stage, but we'd like to reassure everyone we do not believe there is any increased risk to members of the public," he added.

"Nevertheless, we know this tragic incident will cause concern and upset in the local community, and therefore we will ensure neighbourhood officers are available in the area to provide help and support to anyone who needs us."

Anyone who may have information that could assist in the investigation has been asked to contact police or Crimestoppers.
