A man found fatally injured in a street in Newark died as a result of a stab wound to the chest, an inquest has heard.

James Cook was discovered on Castle Gate on 1 May, and his identity was confirmed to police by his brother.

Nottingham Coroner's Court heard the 40-year-old had been involved in an "altercation" with another person before he was found.

The inquest was opened on Tuesday before being adjourned while criminal proceedings take place.

Last month, Brandon Byrne, of Winston Court in Newark, was charged with Mr Cook's murder.

Nottinghamshire Police said he remained in custody and was due to appear at Nottingham Crown Court on 27 June.
