Arrest as man seriously injured in fire

A man in his 40s is in hospital and another has been arrested

A man has been arrested over a house fire which left another with serious injuries.

The man, aged in his 40s, was held on suspicion of cannabis production following the blaze, which happened in Southend Road, Sunderland, at about 19:40 GMT on Monday.

Residents were evacuated from their homes "as a precaution", Northumbria Police said, with "the majority" having returned.

The injured man, also in his 40s, is being treated in hospital.

Firefighters from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service were at the scene for about two hours.

It deployed four fire engines from Farringdon, Marley Park and Sunderland Central to tackle the blaze.

Police said officers were in the area carrying out inquiries.
